WordPress is based on PHP which is supported by both Linux and Windows. Windows is used for sites based on ASP.NET which is not supported by Linux . So, go for Linux: it is cheaper, more secure, and more people are using it for WP.
If you are using HostGator use these coupon codes to get discount:

Personally I’d use Linux, but it probably won’t matter either way.
Linux shared hosting is best for wordpress.
linux is absolutely the primary choice
If it based in PHP means you can go for Linux website hosting..It’s based in ASP.Net you can host it Windows Platform based Word press Blog hosting.Get the Hosting plans at low cost here http://www.thewebpole.com/ and host your sites.
Unless you absolutely MUST have windows for windows programming like asp.net or other windows eccentric feature, always go linux.
its linux shared hosting, wordpress is written in php which is platform independent. so why do pay more for windows hosting.
You can use Linux. It is cheaper compared to Windows. Linux provides a meaning stability and speed meaning Linux web servers will crash less often than Windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Wndows. Linux supports a number of software, programs, languages, and databases for instance PHP, Perl, PostGre, MySQL, PostgreSQL and even more which can make it very scalable. Over the downside, Linux isn’t fully suitable for many Microsoft technologies if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows can be a more good choice.
