thnaks for the two answers, which graphic card do you suggest, i dont play games in my pc, and what did you mean by not great

Can an ordinary home PC not initially or originally designated as a webserver or mail server be used as a mail server?

Moreover, can said PC, be used as a mail server with a simple dial-up connection for the use of pure text mesaging and/or newsletters. (no graphic attachments and such)

If so, then how? What software would lend itself easily to the task without me having to have the be an expert.

As an ex-programmer… I don’t wanna. Although I will write a script if necessary, I’m looking for simple graphical or web-based interfaces whenever possible. Something so easy that it would make a true geek vomit.

streaming movies to many people?

I’m going to be embarking on a boat trip with about two hundred other students here in a few months. We always share our movies over the network so everyone can enjoy other people’s movie collections. A problem we’ve been running into is the number of connections hits a limit. I think this is because people browse into the Windows Network, find the .avi movie they want to watch, then double click right on that .avi. They maintain a connection to my computer for the entire duration of the movie, rather than only the length of time it takes to copy 700MB to their own computer and watch it locally.

Some of the movies I will be sharing are m2ts copies, super HD and 5GB/2 hours of video. I think I’ll be able to maintain 1.5 connections to people trying to stream movies that are this damn huge!

I anticipate a solution may involve running some sort of local webserver with some obnoxious packages installed… or running an ftp server. Ooo, people can connect to ftp://user:pass@192.168.1.15 or whatever … that might work.

but I was wondering if anyone had a more elegant solution? A way that doesn’t require any (or much) additional software or knowledge from other users?

I’m running Windows 7, and would like to share these movies/music/tv through a Windows Network simple file sharing.
@adaviel
Hmmm, multicast. That sounds like a word for what I’m trying to do. So instead of an ftp server, or windows file sharing, you recommend a bittorrent tracker?
@eric
from my friend eric:
When I was living in the dorms the best file sharing solution was Direct Connect. Everyone’s collection is cataloged by the server so that you can search and browse everyone’s collection from the client. The most popular client is DC++ http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/. There are several implementations of the server, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Connect_(file_sharing)#Hub_software for a big list. Just get people to install the client and point at your server and then everyone can download from everyone else, no pesky Windows CIFS involved.

Create a webserver?

Hey I want to host files using my current Internet connection. I’m just not how to go about doing it with my current ISP (which I am not willing to change).

I currently use comcast high speed internet and im supposed to have a Dynamic IP. I signed up for Dyna DNS but noticed that for some reason, my computers IP is static. I tried hosting some files on a windows machine, but was unable to access them on the internet, only on my LAN.

When I setup my webserver it should be running Ubuntu Linux but I want to know what software I need to install and what settings need to be changed in order to host an ASP.net site. Nothing too complicated, I’m fairly new to Linux.

here is both the software and computer specs..

Dedicated Servers In General?

I am currently experimenting with dedicated servers and I am just about to purchase one as I would like to run game servers from it.

I don’t know anything about dedicated servers when it comes to the software side of things. The company I am using offers you a Windows or Linux solution, I am going with the Windows solution as the games I would like to run servers from, run on Windows.

Now this is where I am confused, what type of windows system do I want to use? Webserver 2008 web edition or standard?

Once I have picked web edition or standard it also asks if I would like to addon cpanel at an extra cost. Do I need cpanel or can I run servers just from webserver 2008? Also what else can I use instead of cpanel?

Any guides you have on running a server would also be beneficial as I dont know how to run multiple UT2004 game servers for example from a dedicated server?

Many thanks for the help!
